Nursing is a vital healthcare profession that integrates the art and science of caring.

Its primary mission is the protection, promotion, and optimization of human health and functioning. Nurses work to prevent illness and injury while facilitating the healing process. They also focus on the alleviation of suffering through a compassionate presence. In most healthcare environments, nurses comprise the largest component of the workforce. They work collaboratively with physicians, therapists, and patients' families to develop comprehensive plans of care. These plans aim to treat illness and improve a patient's overall quality of life.

The mechanism of nursing involves both direct clinical action and complex coordination. Nurses observe patients and implement specific interventions to manage health needs. In many regions, the role includes high-level clinical decision-making. For example, in the United States and the United Kingdom, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners can diagnose health problems. These advanced practitioners may also prescribe medications and other therapies depending on local regulations. Beyond direct treatment, nurses often coordinate the care performed by various other providers. They also serve as educators, teaching the public about wellness and health promotion.

Nursing practice is divided into many distinct specialties and levels of responsibility. Some nurses act independently as nursing professionals, while others work within a larger medical team. Advanced practice nurses, such as nurse practitioners in the U.S., hold graduate degrees. These specialists are permitted to practice independently in more than half of the United States. Other specialized roles have emerged over time, such as orthopedic nursing. Agnes Hunt was a pioneer in this field, helping to establish specialized orthopedic hospitals. These different paths allow nurses to focus on specific patient populations or medical needs.

The history of nursing is long and has faced significant interruptions. In ancient India around 600 BC, the Sushruta Samhita emphasized the importance of anatomy for caregivers. During the Middle Ages, religious orders of monks and nuns provided much of the nursing care. However, the Reformation in Europe led to the closure of many monasteries and convents. This caused the nursing profession in Europe to be largely extinguished for approximately 200 years. It was not until the 19th century that modern professional nursing began to take its current shape.

Florence Nightingale was a central figure in defining modern nursing and its education. During the Crimean War, she emphasized the link between health and environmental factors. She identified five essential factors: pure air, pure water, efficient drainage, cleanliness, and light. Nightingale’s focus on sanitation led to measurable improvements in patient outcomes. In 1873, she reported that mortality among soldiers in India had declined from 69 to 18 per 1,000. Her work led to the creation of nursing schools connected to hospitals and medical schools, a model that spread globally after 1870.

Many other individuals contributed to the professionalization of the field. Mary Seacole was a Jamaican healer who used herbs and hygiene to care for soldiers in the Crimea. In the United States, Linda Richards became the first professionally trained nurse in 1873. Clarissa "Clara" Barton founded the American Red Cross, providing new professional opportunities for nurses. During the 20th century, nursing roles expanded through military service in both World Wars. While nursing was historically viewed as a woman's profession, it became an officially gender-neutral profession during the late 20th century.

Today, the nursing profession faces significant challenges regarding supply and demand. There is currently a high demand for qualified nurses in many countries, particularly in Africa and South East Asia. A 2022 McKinsey & Company survey found that 28% to 38% of nurse respondents in several countries were likely to leave direct patient care within the next year. In a 2023 American survey, approximately 30% of nurses reported considering leaving patient care. Many professionals cited the need for a safe working environment and a better work-life balance. Interestingly, pay ranked only eighth on the list of factors that would encourage nurses to stay in their roles.

The evolution of nursing continues as it becomes recognized as a distinct academic discipline. After the Second World War, the development of undergraduate and post-graduate nursing degrees accelerated. This shift led to increased nursing research and the formation of professional organizations and academic journals. Nursing now connects deeply with various fields of science and social responsibility. As the profession continues to change, it remains a cornerstone of the global healthcare system.
