To do their job, pharmacists must follow many steps. They study how drugs act inside the human body. They look at how a drug might interact with another one. This helps them prevent mistakes that could make someone sick. They also monitor how a patient is doing with their medicine. This way of looking after a person is called pharmaceutical care. This role helps reduce errors and keeps people healthier over time. They can even make custom medicines, which is called compounding.

Learning to be a pharmacist takes a lot of hard work. Most pharmacists go to a university or a graduate school. They study many subjects like biology and chemistry. They also learn about anatomy, which is how the body is built. They study physiology to see how the body works. In the European Union, pharmacists must have a Master of Pharmacy degree. This allows them to work in many different countries. In some places, they must also pass special exams to get a license.

There are many different places where a pharmacist might work. A community pharmacist works in a retail shop in a town. A hospital pharmacist works in a medical center with doctors. Some pharmacists work in the military or for the government. Others work in research labs to help find new drugs. In Canada, about 70% of pharmacists work in community pharmacies. Another 15% work in hospitals. Some even work in industry or at universities.

Pharmacists are part of a large team of health workers. They talk to doctors and other experts to help patients. They can give immunizations to help keep people from getting sick. They also check that medicine labels are correct. In some areas, they can even help prescribe certain medicines. This is often done through a special agreement with a doctor. They make sure everyone uses the right amount of medicine. Their work helps the whole healthcare system run better.
