Nuri spent much of his early life training to be a soldier. He studied at a military college in Istanbul. He even fought in the Arab Revolt. During these battles, he worked alongside T. E. Lawrence. These early years helped him become part of a new group of leaders.

Nuri used his skills to gain a lot of power. In 1922, he became the first director of the Iraqi police. He often gave important jobs to his own supporters. This helped him stay in control of the government. In 1924, he became a top leader in the army. He was a very close ally to King Faisal. Nuri helped the king build a strong military for the new nation. He also helped the king take control of Damascus in 1918. These roles made him a major figure in Iraqi politics.

His time as a leader had many ups and downs. In 1930, he signed a treaty with Britain. This treaty gave Britain military rights in Iraq. Many people in Iraq did not like this decision. In 1932, he helped Iraq join the League of Nations. This was an organization that helped countries work together. Nuri was sometimes removed from power by the king. He also had to leave the country for a short time in 1941. However, he always found a way to return to his high positions.

Nuri also worked to change how Iraq made money. In the early 1950s, oil became very important for the country. He made a deal with the Iraq Petroleum Company. This deal allowed Iraq to share the profits from oil. He also helped start the Iraqi Development Board. This group worked on big projects to help the economy grow. These projects helped the private business sector become very strong. However, many poor workers still had a very hard time. Their lives did not get much better under his rule.

By the end of the 1950s, many people were unhappy with Nuri. They did not like his close ties to Britain. They also felt he did not understand how society was changing. In July 1958, a sudden change in government called a coup happened. This event ended the rule of the kings in Iraq. Nuri tried to leave the country to stay safe. Sadly, he was caught by a crowd and killed. This marked a huge turning point in the history of Iraq.
