He lived during a time of great change in the Middle East. Faisal was born in Mecca in 1885. His father was Hussein bin Ali, the Grand Sharif of Mecca. Faisal grew up in Istanbul, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. He learned how to be a leader from his father. This training helped him guide many people later in life.

During World War I, Faisal played a very big role.

He led the Great Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire. He worked with a British officer named T. E. Lawrence. Together, they led the Northern Army through parts of modern Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria. Faisal wanted to help create an independent state for Arab people. He even tried to negotiate with the Ottomans to rule certain areas. These choices helped shape the history of the whole region.

Faisal's journey to becoming a king had many steps.

In 1919, he went to the Paris Peace Conference to speak for Arab interests. He even signed the Faisal–Weizmann Agreement in 1919 to try for cooperation. In March 1920, the Syrian National Congress named him King of Syria. However, France wanted to rule that area instead. The French invaded in 1920 and forced Faisal into exile. This was a very hard time for his new kingdom.

After leaving Syria, Faisal became the King of Iraq.

The British helped arrange this in 1921 after a meeting called the Cairo Conference. Faisal arrived at the port of Basra in June 1921. Some people in Iraq were very happy to see him. Others, like the people in Najaf, were not so sure. He became king on August 23, 1921, after a vote. He worked hard to unite Sunni and Shia Muslims in his new land.

Faisal's work helped Iraq become a recognized country.

In 1932, Iraq finally gained independence from British rule. The country then joined the League of Nations. This was a group where nations worked together to keep peace. Faisal died of a heart attack in Switzerland in 1933. He was only 48 years old when he passed away. His eldest son, Ghazi, took over as the next king.
