He served as the King of Iraq from August 1921 until 1933. Faisal was a member of the Hashemite family, a powerful dynasty. He was the third son of Hussein bin Ali, the Grand Emir and Sharif of Mecca. Born in Mecca in 1885, Faisal spent much of his youth in Istanbul. This upbringing allowed him to learn leadership directly from his father. He later served as a representative for Jeddah in the Ottoman parliament in 1913.

Faisal's political career accelerated during the First World War. In 1916, he began leading the Great Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire.

He commanded the Northern Army, which operated across modern-day Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria. To achieve his goals, he worked closely with T. E. Lawrence, a British intelligence officer. Lawrence believed Faisal was the right leader to establish an independent Arabian state. During the conflict, Faisal even attempted to negotiate with the Ottomans. He sought to rule the provinces of Syria and Mosul as an Ottoman vassal. However, the Ottoman leaders refused his terms, and he remained loyal to the Arab cause.

Following the war, Faisal sought to secure a place for Arab interests in the new world order. In 1919, he led the Arab delegation to the Paris Peace Conference.

Supported by the influential Gertrude Bell, he argued for independent Arab emirates. During this time, he also signed the Faisal–Weizmann Agreement. This 1919 agreement aimed to foster cooperation between Arab and Jewish groups. Faisal hoped that Jewish influence might help protect Arab autonomy from European powers. However, this partnership faced many challenges and eventually failed by late 1920.

Faisal's first attempt at kingship occurred in the Arab Kingdom of Syria. In March 1920, the Syrian National Congress proclaimed him king.

This was a significant moment for the people of Greater Syria. However, the San Remo conference in April 1920 gave France a Mandate for Syria and Lebanon. This led to the Franco-Syrian War. In July 1920, the French won the Battle of Maysalun. The French forces abolished the kingdom and forced Faisal into exile. This setback redirected his political path toward a new territory.

In 1921, the British government decided to establish a monarchy in Iraq. They wanted a leader who was popular but also willing to work with British administration. At the Cairo Conference in March 1921, the British selected Faisal for this role.

Faisal arrived at the port of Basra in June 1921. His arrival received a mixed response from the Iraqi people. While many in Baghdad and Hillah welcomed him, some groups in the south were hostile. Despite this, a plebiscite showed that 96% of voters favored his leadership. He officially became the King of Iraq on August 23, 1921.

As king, Faisal worked to build a sense of national identity in a new country. Iraq had been formed from three Ottoman provinces: Mosul, Baghdad, and Basra. Because these areas were distinct, there was no existing sense of Iraqi nationalism. Faisal promoted pan-Arabism to connect Iraq with Syria and the Fertile Crescent. He also worked to foster unity between Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims. He wanted to encourage a common loyalty to the new state. His goal was to create a stable nation out of diverse groups.

Faisal's reign reached a major milestone in 1932. This was the year the British Mandate ended and Iraq gained independence.

Upon gaining independence, Iraq joined the League of Nations. This international organization was designed to promote global cooperation. Faisal's leadership helped transition the country into a recognized sovereign state. He died of a heart attack in Bern, Switzerland, in 1933 at age 48. His eldest son, Ghazi, succeeded him as king, continuing the Hashemite rule in Iraq.
