Faisal II was the final monarch of the Hashemite monarchy in Iraq.

His reign spanned from 1939 until the sudden political changes of 1958. This period marked the end of a thirty-seven-year era of royal rule. After his death, Iraq transitioned from a kingdom into a republic. His life was defined by early responsibility and a changing political landscape. He faced the challenges of modernizing a nation during a time of global conflict.

Faisal's path to power began under very difficult circumstances. He was the only son of King Ghazi and Queen Aliya. In 1935, his father died in a mysterious car crash. Because Faisal was only three years old, he could not rule alone. His uncle, Prince 'Abd al-Ilah, acted as regent to manage the country. A regent is a person who holds power for a monarch who is too young. This arrangement lasted until Faisal reached adulthood in 1953.

His childhood was shaped by the massive shifts of the Second World War.

In 1941, a military coup attempted to align Iraq with the Axis powers. This led to the Anglo-Iraqi War, where British and Jordanian forces restored the regent. During the war, Faisal and his mother moved to the United Kingdom for safety. He attended Sandroyd School and later Harrow School in England. There, he became close friends with his cousin, Prince Hussein, who later became King of Jordan.

The two cousins even discussed merging their realms to face rising political threats.

In 1952, a seventeen-year-old Faisal took a significant trip to the United States. He wanted to study American development projects like agriculture and irrigation. He believed these systems were essential for the future of Iraq. During his five-week tour, he visited the United Nations Headquarters in Manhattan. He also met President Harry Truman in Washington, D.C. One famous moment occurred at Ebbets Field, where he watched a baseball game.

He even attended a reception with Mayor Vincent R. Impellitteri in New York City.

Faisal began his active rule in May 1953, the same day Hussein was enthroned in Jordan. His reign focused on modernization and the development of Greater Baghdad. He used increased oil revenues to fund large-scale infrastructure and housing projects. To achieve this, he created the Development Board to improve living conditions. He invited world-famous architects, such as Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, to design public buildings. These efforts aimed to create a modern urban environment without relying solely on Western help. Some of these designs, like the Baghdad Gymnasium, were built decades later.

Despite these projects, the political climate in Iraq became increasingly unstable. Economic inequality created a wide gap between the wealthy elite and the poor peasantry. Many citizens felt the government was too closely tied to the United Kingdom. This tension was fueled by the Baghdad Pact of 1955 and rising pan-Arab nationalism. In early 1958, Faisal attempted to strengthen ties with Jordan by forming the Arab Federation. He served as the head of this new union, but it did not stop the growing opposition.

The end of the monarchy came during the 14 July Revolution in 1958. A group of Royal Iraqi Army officers, led by Abdul-Karim Qasim, launched a coup d'état. This sudden takeover resulted in the death of the King and many family members. The massacre took place at the Al-Rehab Palace.
