Novaya Zemlya is a group of islands in the far north of Russia.

It sits in the Arctic Ocean at the edge of Europe. The islands act like a wall between two different bodies of water. To the west lies the Barents Sea. To the east lies the Kara Sea. This archipelago is actually an extension of the Ural Mountains. Because of this, the land is very mountainous throughout. The coast is very bumpy and has many fjords. A fjord is a long, narrow inlet of the sea.

The islands are split into two main parts. The northern island is called Severny Island. It is covered by a huge ice cap and many active glaciers. The southern island is called Yuzhny Island. This island is mostly a tundra landscape without much ice. A narrow strip of water called the Matochkin Strait separates the two islands.

The highest peak is on Severny Island. It reaches a height of 1,547 meters.

People have known about these islands for a very long time. Hunters from Novgorod visited the area in the 11th century. Later, Western explorers searched for a way to sail through the north. Hugh Willoughby was the first Western European to visit in 1553. In 1594, Willem Barentsz reached the west coast. He even spent a winter on the northeastern coast. Other explorers like Henry Hudson also passed through these waters. In 1870, the first permanent settlement was built at Malye Karmakuly.

During the 1900s, Novaya Zemlya became a very important military area. It was used as a major site for nuclear testing by the Soviet Union. One famous test happened on October 30, 1961. This was the Tsar Bomba, the most powerful nuclear weapon ever used. The testing happened in different zones like Zone A, B, and C. These tests were so strong they caused huge avalanches. One test in 1973 even created a new lake. The last nuclear test in the region took place in 1990.

Life on the islands has changed many times over the years. Long ago, Nenets families lived there and hunted polar bears. They also herded reindeer and caught fish. In 1957, the civilian population was moved to the mainland. Today, about 2,429 people live on the islands. Most of them live in the town of Belushya Guba. Many of these people are workers for the military or for construction. They live in a place that is very different from most cities.
