The Tsar Bomba was the most powerful nuclear weapon ever built and tested.

It was a thermonuclear aerial bomb created by the Soviet Union. This means it used heat to create a massive explosion. The bomb was officially called product 602 or AN602. Some people also called it Ivan. It was designed to be a very large and strong weapon. This project was a major part of the Soviet nuclear program. It was meant to show the strength of their science to the world.

The bomb worked using a three-stage design.

First, a fission bomb primary would explode. This explosion would then compress a secondary module. This module was a thermonuclear charge. The energy from that first part would then compress a much larger third stage. This process is called radiation implosion. In the actual test, scientists used lead instead of natural uranium. They did this to reduce the amount of radioactive fallout. This change helped make the test slightly safer for the environment.

Soviet leaders ordered the project in July 1961.

Nikita Khrushchev was the leader of the Communist Party at that time. He wanted the test to happen during a big party meeting. The work was done at a place called Arzamas-16. Many scientists worked together on the design. Andrei Sakharov was the physicist who oversaw the project. Other designers included Viktor Adamsky, Yuri Babayev, and Yuri Trutnev. They wanted to prove they could make explosives of almost unlimited power.

The test happened on 30 October 1961.

A Tu-95V aircraft dropped the bomb using a parachute. It exploded over Severny Island at a place called Novaya Zemlya. The bomb had a yield of about 50 megatons of TNT. This is 1,570 times the energy of the bombs used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was also ten times the energy of all conventional explosives from World War II. Some later data suggested the yield might have been even higher. The explosion was so large it even damaged the planes that recorded it.

Even though it was huge, the bomb was not practical for war.

It was simply too heavy and large to be used in battle. The name Tsar Bomba was actually created in the 1990s. It was named after the Tsar Cannon and the Tsar Bell. These are famous Russian objects that were too big to be useful. The bomb did help in other ways, though. It helped scientists learn how to build the Proton rocket. It also changed how different countries talked about nuclear testing rules.
