technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The IBM 7030 was a very important machine known as Stretch. It was the first supercomputer to use transistors to work. A supercomputer is a very fast type of computer used for hard science tasks.

Stretch was the fastest computer on Earth from 1961 until 1964. It helped scientists solve big math problems. Even though it had some problems, it changed how we build computers. It was a huge step forward for technology.

Building this machine was a massive task involving many parts. The computer used 169,100 transistors to process information. It also used 4,025 double cards and 18,747 single cards.

To keep the memory stable, the parts sat in immersion oil. This oil helped control the temperature while the machine ran. The computer also used 21 kilowatts of power to operate. It was a very large and powerful system.

Scientists wanted a new way to do complex math calculations. In 1955, Dr. Edward Teller asked for a system to do three-dimensional work. IBM first thought about a different design called LARC. They decided to build something much better instead.

They started Project Stretch in January 1956. The goal was to make it 100 times faster than the IBM 704. This was a very bold and difficult plan.

Stretch did not reach all its speed goals. It was only about 30 times faster than the IBM 704. Because it was slower than expected, IBM had to change the price. The cost dropped from $13.5 million to $7.78 million.

The first machine went to Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1961. Another version went to the National Security Agency in 1962. It was a very expensive and famous project.

Even if Stretch was not a commercial success, it was a great teacher. It used ideas like memory protection to keep data safe.

These ideas helped create the successful IBM System/360 in 1964. Many of its features are used in modern microprocessors today. You can find these same ideas in a computer or a phone. Stretch helped pave the way for the digital world we use now.
