It is part of northern Russia. The islands sit between two seas. The Barents Sea is to the west. The Kara Sea is to the east. The islands are an extension of the Ural Mountains. This means the land is very mountainous.

There are two main islands. They are separated by the Matochkin Strait. The northern island is called Severny. It has a large ice cap and many glaciers. The southern island is called Yuzhny. It has a tundra landscape. The coast is very bumpy with many fjords. A fjord is a long, narrow sea inlet.

Long ago, Nenets families lived here. They hunted polar bears and seals. They also kept reindeer. Later, the islands became a place for nuclear testing. This was a very sensitive military area. One test used the Tsar Bomba. It was the most powerful nuclear weapon ever used. Today, about 2,429 people live there. Most people live in the town of Belushya Guba. Many work in the military or in building.
