It sits on Severny Island. This island is part of Novaya Zemlya. The cape marks a split between two seas. One is the Barents Sea. The other is the Kara Sea.

The area is a lonely and empty place. It faces very cold Arctic winters. Because it is so special, it is part of a national park.

A man named William Barents found it in 1595. He was a Dutch explorer. He named it Cape Desire.
