It sits along the northern coasts of Norway and Russia. This path connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. It travels through several different seas. These include the Barents Sea, the Kara Sea, and the Laptev Sea. It also goes through the East Siberian Sea and the Chukchi Sea.

Some people call a large part of it the Northern Sea Route. This name can be a bit confusing because the terms overlap. The Northern Sea Route is a specific part defined by Russian law. It does not include the Barents Sea, so it does not reach the Atlantic. However, many people use the names to mean the same thing.

People have wanted to use this route for a very long time. In the 1500s, people looked for ways to trade more easily. They wanted a way to reach China and India. This would have been very important for money and for ships.

Early explorers like Grigory Istoma wrote about his trips in 1496. Later, traders made a path from Arkhangelsk to the Yamal Peninsula. This was called the Mangazeya seaway. It was an early version of the route we know today. Russian settlers called the Pomors also explored these cold waters. They were very good at sailing in the Arctic.

Many brave explorers tried to master these icy waters. In 1596, Willem Barentsz found Spitsbergen and Bear Island. He also sailed around the north of Novaya Zemlya. Later, Vitus Bering explored the area in the 1700s. He was a Danish-born explorer working for Russia. Bering named the Diomede Islands during his travels. He also found the Bering Strait. Semyon Chelyuskin reached Cape Chelyuskin in 1742. This is the northernmost point of the Eurasian continent. These trips helped people draw better maps of the world. They proved how the land and sea were connected.

One of the most important trips happened in 1878. An explorer named Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld led the way. He was from Finland but lived in Sweden. He sailed a ship named the Vega from west to east. This was the first complete trip through the passage.

He had help from King Oscar II of Sweden. The trip was not always easy for the crew. The Vega had to stop for the winter. This happened because thick pack ice blocked the way. They were only a few days' sailing from the Bering Strait. This successful trip proved the passage could be sailed.

Today, technology makes the route much easier to use. We now have radio, steamboats, and huge icebreakers.

Icebreakers are special ships that can break through frozen water. In 1932, a ship called the A. Sibiryakov finished a full trip in one summer. This was the first time anyone did that without stopping to wait out the winter. In 1935, the Northern Sea Route officially opened for trade. Now, the route is a key part of how ships move through the Arctic. It connects different parts of the world through the cold north.
