Later, Great Britain used the island as a place for prisoners. This started in 1788 when the first group arrived. The island was sometimes empty for many years. One time, it was abandoned from 1814 until 1825.

In 1856, new families moved there from Pitcairn Island. These people were descendants of the Bounty mutineers.

Life on the island has changed a lot over time. The Pitcairn families started farms and worked with whales.

Whaling ships often stopped at the island for wood and water. In 1914, the island was officially given to Australia. During World War II, the island became a very important airbase.

Soldiers from Australia, New Zealand, and the United States built an airstrip there. They used the island to refuel planes during the war.

One very special thing grows on the island. It is the Norfolk Island pine tree. This evergreen tree stays green all year long. It is a symbol of the island and is on its flag.

People all over the world buy these trees for their gardens. They are a major export for the local people. This tree helps connect the small island to the rest of the world.

Today, the island is a unique part of Australia. It has its own history and its own special plants. You can see old buildings from the time when prisoners lived there.
