It shows four people inside a bright diner late at night. You see them through a large, clear glass window. The light from the diner shines out onto a dark, empty street. Many people think this painting shows the loneliness of living in a big city. Hopper himself said he did not see it as being particularly lonely. It is one of the most well-known works in American art history.

Hopper worked on this painting for about a month and a half. He used oil paint on a canvas to create the scene. His wife, Josephine, helped him by posing as the woman at the counter. Hopper also used a mirror to pose as the two men.

He originally wanted to call the painting "Night Hawks" with a space. Jo Hopper liked that name very much. She even wrote about it in her personal notes.

The painting belongs to a style called American Realism. This style focuses on showing real life as it actually looks. Hopper finished the work on January 21, 1942. It was first shown at a gallery called Rehn's. A man named Daniel Catton Rich saw the painting there. He was the director of the Art Institute of Chicago. He thought the painting was very fine.

On May 13, 1942, the Art Institute of Chicago bought the painting. They paid $3,000 for it. This was a large amount of money back then. The diner in the painting was likely inspired by a real place. Hopper said it was suggested by a restaurant in Greenwich Village. This area is part of Manhattan in New York City. Some people have searched for the exact building that inspired him. They found that the original diner was likely demolished long ago.

Because Nighthawks is so famous, many other creators use it for ideas. Some artists make parodies, which are funny versions of the original. For example, the artist Red Grooms made a version called "Nighthawks Revisited." Other artists like Ralph Goings painted similar diner scenes. Writers have also written poems and stories about the people in the cafe. Even filmmakers use the look of this painting in movies. It helped create the mood for a style called film noir.
