The Night Watch is one of the most famous paintings from the Dutch Golden Age.

It was painted by Rembrandt van Rijn in 1642. This huge artwork shows a group of civic militia guards. They are a group of people who protect their city. The painting is famous because it turns a simple group portrait into a scene full of drama. Rembrandt used a style called tenebrism, which uses strong light and deep shadows. This makes the people in the painting look like they are moving through a real moment. Even though it is called The Night Watch, the scene does not actually take place at night.

In the painting, you can see many different characters. Captain Frans Banninck Cocq leads the group in black clothes and a red sash. Beside him is his lieutenant, Willem van Ruytenburch, who wears yellow with a white sash. Behind them, an ensign named Jan Visscher Cornelissen carries the company's colors. There are 34 characters in total shown in the work. Rembrandt even added a young girl with a dead chicken on her belt. This girl holds a symbol for the arquebusiers, who were soldiers using special guns.

This painting was a very big job for Rembrandt. Around 1639, Captain Banninck Cocq and seventeen other members of his militia commissioned the work. They wanted it to hang in the Kloveniersdoelen, which was a meeting hall in Amsterdam. Rembrandt was paid 1,600 guilders for the painting. Each of the members paid one hundred guilders to help cover the cost. Because the painting was so large, Rembrandt had to finish it in a lean-to in his garden. It was too big to fit inside his regular studio in Amsterdam.

Over many years, the painting has changed and moved. In 1715, it was moved to the Amsterdam Town Hall. To make it fit between two columns, workers trimmed the edges on all four sides. This meant that some people and parts of the scene were lost forever. During World War II, the painting was even rolled up around a cylinder for safety. It was kept in a special safe in the caves of Maastricht for four years. Today, the painting lives in its permanent home at the Rijksmuseum.

The painting has inspired many people through the years. It has been the subject of songs by rock bands like King Crimson. It has even been used as a main part of stories in movies. Scientists now use new tools to study it, like a massive 44.8 gigapixel photograph. This photo uses 528 different pictures stitched together to show tiny details. Museums also use special LED lights to protect the colors. These lights help us see the beautiful shades Rembrandt used without hurting the art.
