A man named Rembrandt made it in 1642. It shows a group of civic guards. These men were part of a militia. They are moving out together in a group. Captain Frans Banninck Cocq leads the way. He wears black clothes and a red sash. Beside him is Willem van Ruytenburch. He wears yellow clothes and a white sash.

The painting uses light and shadow to show drama. This style is called tenebrism. Many people think it shows a night scene. This name is actually a mistake. A dark coating once covered the art. This made it look like night. People removed that coating in the 1940s.

Long ago, the painting was trimmed on all sides. This was done to make it fit a wall. Because of this, some people in the art were lost. Today, you can see it at the Rijksmuseum. It is a very important part of Dutch history.
