It was made by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. People call this style Post-Impressionism. This painting is known as a touchstone of modern art. It is one of the most recognized works in the Western world. Many people feel a deep connection to its swirling colors. It shows a beautiful and busy night sky.

Van Gogh painted the scene using many bright colors. He used ultramarine and cobalt blue for the sky. He used indian yellow and zinc yellow for the stars and the moon. The sky has large, swirling shapes that move across the canvas. A large cypress tree stands tall in the front.

He also added an imaginary village at the bottom. This village was not actually outside his window. He based the village on sketches he made earlier. The moon in the painting is stylized and not quite accurate to science.

Vincent van Gogh painted this in June 1889. He was staying at a place called Saint-Paul-de-Mausole.

This was a mental asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. It used to be a monastery. Van Gogh moved there on 8 May 1889. He chose to stay there after a difficult time. The facility was not full when he arrived. This gave him a bedroom and a studio to work in. He was very busy making art during his year there.

The view comes from his east-facing bedroom window.

He saw the morning star, which is the planet Venus, in the sky. Researchers say Venus was very bright that spring. He painted the view from his window many times. He made at least twenty-one different versions of it. Some versions showed the sunrise or even rain. He often worked in a series of paintings. This painting is the only night study in that specific series.

This painting has a very long history of owners. After Vincent died, his brother Theo inherited the work. Then Theo's widow, Jo, owned it for a while. It moved through many hands over the years. A woman named Georgette P. van Stolk owned it from 1906 to 1938. Finally, it went to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. It arrived there in 1941 through the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest. Today, it is a treasure that people travel far to see.
