Night heron

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Night herons are medium-sized birds. They are 58 to 65 cm long.

Most of them hunt at night. Their name comes from a Greek word. It means "night raven." This is because they make loud sounds. They sound like a crow or a bark.

Adults have short necks and short legs. They have brown or grey feathers. Many also have a black crown. Young birds are brown with white spots.

These birds live on almost every continent. They do not live in Antarctica.

In Europe, some birds fly to Africa for the winter. They rest in trees during the day. At night, they wait by the water. They stay very still to catch prey. They eat small fish and frogs. They also eat bugs and small mammals.

Night herons make nests from sticks. They nest in trees or on the ground. They may nest alone or in a group. A mother lays 3 to 8 eggs. Some types of these birds are now extinct. This happened on small islands. They sometimes lost the power to fly.
