It has a long, black beak. It also has long black legs. Some birds have yellow feet. During the breeding season, they grow long feathers on their heads. These feathers form a crest.

These birds live near water. They like places like lakes, rivers, and marshes. They hunt for food in shallow water. They may stand very still to wait for prey. They also run or shuffle their feet to scare small fish.

They eat fish, frogs, and even small insects.

Little egrets are social birds. They build nests in groups called colonies. They make nests out of sticks in trees or bushes. Both parents help look after the eggs. The eggs are a blue-green color. They hatch in about three weeks.

Long ago, people hunted these birds. They wanted the feathers for hats. This made the number of birds drop. Now, laws help protect them. Their numbers are growing again. They are even moving into new places like the United Kingdom.
