life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The black stork is a large bird.

It has mostly black feathers. These feathers have a green and purple shine. The bird also has white parts on its belly. It has a long red beak and long red legs.

These birds are very shy. They like to stay away from people. You will often see them alone or in pairs. They like to live near rivers and marshes. The stork walks slowly through shallow water. It stalks its prey to find food. It eats small fish, insects, and amphibians.

Many black storks are migrants. This means they fly to new places each year. They fly from Europe to warm parts of Africa. Some also fly to parts of Asia. They use thermals to help them fly. Thermals are columns of warm air that lift birds up.

Pairs build nests in large trees. They may also use big rocks or ledges. The female lays two to five eggs. Both parents help keep the eggs warm. This takes about 32 to 38 days.
