Black stork

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The black stork is a large, beautiful bird.

It has dark feathers with a purplish green shine. Its belly and underparts are white. The bird has long red legs and a long, pointed red beak.

This bird is much more shy than the white stork. It prefers to live alone or in pairs. You will often find them in marshy areas or near rivers. They like to stay away from people.

These birds have a special way of finding food. They wade slowly through shallow water. They use their long beaks to stalk prey. They eat things like small fish, insects, and amphibians.

When it is time to have babies, they build nests. They use large forest trees for their homes. Sometimes they build nests on big rocks or mountain ledges. The female lays two to five greyish-white eggs. Both the mother and father help keep the eggs warm. This takes about 32 to 38 days. The young birds stay in the nest for 60 to 71 days.

Many black storks are long-distance migrants. This means they fly to new places every year. They fly from Europe to warm parts of Africa. Other groups fly from Asia to the Indian subcontinent.

They use thermals to help them fly. Thermals are columns of warm air that lift birds up. Because thermals only form over land, the birds must cross the sea at narrow points. They fly through places like the Strait of Gibraltar or the Sinai. Some trips can take 80 days to finish.

People have studied this bird for a long time. A man named Carl Linnaeus first described it in 1758. He used the name *Ardea nigra* at first. Later, a scientist named Mathurin Jacques Brisson moved it to the genus *Ciconia*. An English naturalist named Francis Willughby also wrote about them in the 17th century. He saw one in Frankfurt. In 1997, a scientist named Beth Slikas used DNA to study them. Her work showed they are an early offshoot of their group. In 1968, South Korea named the bird a natural monument.

You might see a black stork if you visit a wetland. They live in many places like Spain, Portugal, and China. Some live in the mountains of Iran. They are not common in many areas. In some places, like India and China, their numbers are going down. But in the Iberian Peninsula, they are increasing.

Groups like Wetlands International work to protect them. Many laws also help keep these birds safe. They are important parts of the natural world.
