It consists of six specific states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The region is bordered by New York to the west and the Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick to the north. To the east and southeast, it meets the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Maine.

This area is recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau as one of nine regional divisions. It is unique because it is the only multi-state region with clear and consistent boundaries. New England maintains a strong sense of identity that blends various social and economic traditions.

The physical geography of the region is quite diverse.

Southeastern New England is characterized by a narrow coastal plain. In contrast, the northern and western areas are dominated by the Appalachian Mountains. These mountains feature rolling hills and worn-down peaks.

Because the Atlantic fall line lies close to the coast, many rivers provide significant water power. This helped cities develop along river valleys, such as the Blackstone and Merrimack rivers.

The Wampanoags occupied parts of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.

European colonization began in the early 17th century.

These wars involved English colonists and their Iroquois allies against the French and their Algonquian allies. The British eventually defeated the French in 1763, which opened more land for settlement.

Political tension with Britain eventually led to the American Revolutionary War.

In the late 18th century, colonists resisted British taxes imposed without their consent. Residents of Boston famously threw British tea into the harbor. Britain responded with the "Intolerable Acts," which stripped Massachusetts of its self-government. These confrontations led to the first battles in 1775. By the spring of 1776, British authorities were expelled from the region. Following the revolution, New England states moved toward the abolition of slavery. Vermont and Massachusetts introduced total abolition in 1777 and 1783, respectively.

New England was the first region in the United States transformed by the Industrial Revolution.

The region is also known for its unique local governance. Most states are divided into small municipalities called towns. Many of these are governed by town meetings.
