Political tension with Britain eventually led to the American Revolutionary War. In the late 18th century, colonists resisted British taxes imposed without their consent. Residents of Boston famously threw British tea into the harbor. Britain responded with the "Intolerable Acts," which stripped Massachusetts of its self-government. These confrontations led to the first battles in 1775. By the spring of 1776, British authorities were expelled from the region. Following the revolution, New England states moved toward the abolition of slavery. Vermont and Massachusetts introduced total abolition in 1777 and 1783, respectively.

The Greater Boston area houses more than half of the total population of New England.
The region is also known for its unique local governance. Most states are divided into small municipalities called towns. Many of these are governed by town meetings.
