Vermont sits to the west, while Massachusetts lies to the south. New Hampshire is the seventh-smallest state by land area in the country. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 1,377,529 residents. Concord serves as the state capital, and Manchester is the most populous city.

The geography of the state is defined by mountains, forests, and many bodies of water. The White Mountains range spans the north-central part of the state. This range includes Mount Washington, which is the tallest peak in the northeastern United States. Mount Washington is famous for having the "World's Worst Weather" due to frequent hurricane-force winds.

The peak holds the record for the second-highest wind speed ever recorded at 231 miles per hour. Another notable landmark was the Old Man of the Mountain, a rock formation in Franconia Notch. This profile-like face disintegrated in May 2003, but it remains a major symbol for the state.

Water plays a major role in the landscape and the state's boundaries. New Hampshire contains more than 800 lakes and ponds.

The Merrimack River flows north to south through the lower half of the state. The Connecticut River defines the western border with Vermont. Interestingly, the border sits at the low-water mark on the Vermont side. This means the entire river along that border lies within New Hampshire. The Piscataqua River forms the state's only significant ocean port at Portsmouth.

Indigenous peoples inhabited the region for thousands of years before European arrival. Algonquian-speaking groups, such as the Abenaki, lived in the area. Archaeological digs suggest people lived near Keene as far back as 12,000 years ago.

English explorers arrived in the early 1600s. The Province of New Hampshire was established in 1629 and named after Hampshire, England. Early settlements included sites like Odiorne's Point and Hilton's Point. The state's motto, "Live Free or Die," reflects its history of rebellion.

New Hampshire played a critical role during the American Revolutionary War. In 1774, rebels seized Fort William and Mary from the British. This event involved some of the first shots of the revolutionary period. In 1776, New Hampshire became the first colony to establish an independent government and state constitution. It later became the ninth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1788. During the U.S. Civil War, the state sent nearly 32,000 Union soldiers to fight. This history of independence continues to influence its modern political culture.

The state's economy has undergone several major transformations over time. In the mid-19th century, New Hampshire was a center for industrialization. It specialized in textile manufacturing, shoemaking, and papermaking. The Amoskeag Manufacturing Company in Manchester was once the largest cotton textile plant in the world.

The state is also a major destination for tourism and recreation. Visitors enjoy the White Mountain National Forest and the Appalachian Trail.

New Hampshire is unique in its approach to taxation and governance. It is one of only nine states that does not have an income tax.

There are also no taxes on sales, capital gains, or inheritance. Instead, the state relies heavily on local property taxes to fund public education. This structure results in one of the lowest state tax burdens in the country. Politically, the state is known for its presidential primary. This early election cycle makes New Hampshire an important testing ground for national candidates.
