This coastline includes Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound. The state even shares a small maritime border with New York. Rhode Island is unique because it is the smallest U.S. state by area.

Despite its small size, it is very crowded. It is the second-most densely populated state in the country. As of 2025, the population was slightly more than 1.11 million residents. Providence serves as the capital and the most populous city.

The state's name and origins are quite interesting. Most of the land is actually on the mainland. The name likely refers to Aquidneck Island, now known as Rhode Island.

In 1524, explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano saw an island near Narragansett Bay. He thought it looked like the island of Rhodes in Greece. Later, in the 1610s, Adriaen Block described it as a "reddish" island.

This red color might have come from red clay or autumn leaves. In 1637, Roger Williams used the name "Rhode Island" for the island. By 1644, the name was officially applied to the island. The state was long known as the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. However, voters approved an amendment in 2020 to drop "and Providence Plantations."

This change made the official name simply Rhode Island.

Before English settlers arrived, Native Americans lived in the region. Five main tribes inhabited the area around Narragansett Bay. The Narragansett held most of the territory. The Wampanoag lived on the eastern borderlands. The Niantic occupied the southwestern coast. The Pequot lived on the western borderlands. The Nipmuc lived on the northern borderlands. In 1636, Roger Williams arrived as a refugee.

He fled religious persecution in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Williams purchased land from the Narragansett to found Providence. He wanted to create a haven for religious liberty. This made Providence the first settlement in North America with a secular government. This means the government was separate from religious institutions.

Rhode Island has a history of independence and dissent. Because it welcomed outcasts, some called it "Rogue's Island." The colony played a major role in the American Revolution. In 1774, it was the first colony to call for a Continental Congress. On May 4, 1776, it was the first to renounce the British Crown.

During the war, the land was heavily contested and occupied. Rhode Island became the fourth state to ratify the Articles of Confederation. This happened on February 9, 1778.

Later, the state's citizens boycotted the 1787 convention. They preferred a weaker central government. Consequently, Rhode Island was the last of the original 13 states to ratify the U.S. Constitution. It finally did so on May 29, 1790.

The state's identity is also tied to its geography. It is officially nicknamed the "Ocean State." This refers to its extensive coastline. Large bays and inlets make up about 14% of the state's total area.

These water features shape much of the local environment. The maritime climate and coastal features are central to the region. Many people visit to see the various islands and sounds. The interaction between the land and the sea defines the state's character.

There were also complex and difficult parts of its history. In the late 1600s, slavery was introduced to the colony. Although a 1652 law tried to abolish it, the law was never enforced. The colony became heavily involved in the slave trade. This involved a "triangular trade" of slaves, sugar, and rum. By 1774, the slave population was 6.3% of the total. This was nearly twice the ratio found in other New England colonies. In the 20th century, the word "plantation" in the state's name became a point of debate. Some felt it symbolized a legacy of slavery. Others felt it was just an old word for a colony. Voters ultimately chose to remove it in 2020.

Today, Rhode Island remains a significant part of the Northeast. It is home to important institutions like Brown University.

Founded in 1764, it was the first American college to accept students regardless of religion. The state's history of religious freedom continues through its diverse culture. From its small size to its bold political past, Rhode Island has a unique place in America. Its journey from a collection of settlements to a modern state is still visible in its cities and towns.
