It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Maine to the east. To the south, it shares borders with Connecticut and Rhode Island. New Hampshire and Vermont lie to its north, while New York is to its west. The state is the seventh-smallest in the country by land area. However, it is very densely populated. It ranks as the third-most densely populated state in the U.S. after New Jersey and Rhode Island. With over 7.1 million people, it is the most populous state in New England.

The name "Massachusetts" has deep roots in the local Indigenous history. It likely comes from the Wôpanâak word *muswachasut*. This term is made of several parts. The word *mus(ây)* means "big." The word *wach* means "mountain." The suffix *-s* is a diminutive, and *-ut* is a locative. This translates to meanings like "near the great hill" or "at the range of hills." These names refer to the Blue Hills, such as the Great Blue Hill.

The state's official title is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In 1779, John Adams likely chose this name for the state constitution. At that time, "commonwealth" suggested a republic. This was a way to show they did not want a monarchy.

Before European arrival, many Algonquian-speaking tribes lived in this region. These included the Wampanoag, Narragansett, Nipmuc, Pocomtuc, Mahican, and Massachusett. They lived in lodges called wigwams or longhouses. These communities were led by elders known as sachems. They hunted, fished, and grew crops like corn and squash. In the early 1600s, European colonists brought diseases to the area. Between 1617 and 1619, a disease likely known as smallpox killed about 90% of the Massachusetts Bay Native Americans.

English colonization began in the early seventeenth century. The Pilgrims founded the Plymouth Colony in 1620.

They were Puritans who wanted to reform the Church of England. In 1630, they established the Massachusetts Bay Colony in Boston. This colony was founded under a royal charter in 1629. The colony faced religious conflict and banished many dissenters. For example, Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson were sent away. Williams later founded what is now Rhode Island.

The state also saw early industrial efforts. In 1646, John Winthrop the Younger established the Saugus Iron Works. This was the first integrated ironworks in North America.

Massachusetts played a central role in the American Revolution. Boston became known as the "Cradle of Liberty" due to political activity.

This era of change continued with Shays' Rebellion in 1786. This populist revolt helped influence the United States Constitutional Convention. The state's economy changed significantly over the centuries. It moved from agriculture, fishing, and trade to manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution.
