During the Siege of Boston, the Continental Army faced the British military. George Washington arrived in July 1775 to lead the army. A young officer named Rufus Putnam used wood to build portable fortifications. They installed these on Dorchester Heights under the cover of darkness. This surprise caused the British to retreat on March 17, 1776. This event is celebrated annually as Evacuation Day.

Following American independence, Boston grew into a major national hub. It served as an important port and a manufacturing center. The city expanded beyond its original peninsula. It did this by filling in land and annexing neighboring towns.

During the 19th century, the city's economy changed significantly. Early on, seafaring and international trade were vital. The city was a primary stop on the Caribbean trade route. This trade brought in large amounts of molasses. This specific trade led to the creation of Boston baked beans. However, the Embargo Act of 1807 and the War of 1812 slowed harbor activity. Merchants began to invest their capital in other ways. By the mid-19th century, industrial manufacturing overtook international trade. Small rivers helped move goods to many mills and factories. A dense network of railroads also helped commerce grow.
