Makhno wanted a world where everyone shared things fairly. He led a movement called the Makhnovshchina. This movement was made by many Ukrainian peasants. They wanted to build a way of life called anarchist communism. This idea was very important to them between 1918 and 1921. His ideas still inspire some people today.

His life began with many hard jobs. Makhno was born in 1888 in Huliaipole. His family was very poor. His father died when Nestor was only ten months old.

Because they had little food, Nestor had to work in the fields at age seven. He saw wealthy landowners take much of the land. This made him feel a lot of anger toward them. He wanted the people who worked the land to own it. This feeling grew as he grew up.

Nestor spent a long time in prison for his ideas. He joined a group called the Union of Poor Peasants. This group fought against the local police and rich owners. In 1910, a court sentenced him to be hanged. However, they changed this to a life sentence of hard labor.
