A man named John Napier lived long ago.

He invented logarithms. This is a special way to use math. We use his name for a unit called the neper.

Scientists use it to measure ratios. A ratio compares two amounts.

The neper helps us measure signals. It can measure electronic signals or sound pressure. It also measures power. It shows how much a signal grows or shrinks. This unit uses a natural logarithm. That is a math tool based on a number called Euler's number.

The neper is not part of the SI system. The SI is the main system for science units. But people can still use the neper with it. It is like the decibel. The decibel and the neper are related. One neper is about 8.69 decibels.

There are also smaller parts of the neper. We call these the decineper and the centineper. A decineper is one tenth of a neper. A centineper is one hundredth of a neper. These small units help with very precise work.
