Rankine scale

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

How do we measure heat? A man named W. J. M. Rankine helped us.

He was an engineer and a physicist. In 1859, he proposed a new way to measure heat. We call this the Rankine scale.

This scale is an absolute scale. This means it starts at absolute zero. Absolute zero is the coldest point possible. On this scale, zero is that very cold point.

One Rankine degree is a small step. This step is the same size as a Fahrenheit degree. This is different from the Kelvin scale. The Kelvin scale uses Celsius degrees for its steps.

Engineers use the Rankine scale for work. They use it when they do math about heat. They use it with the Fahrenheit scale. The symbol for this scale is °R. Sometimes people just write Rankine. It is a useful tool for building things. It helps people study how heat moves.
