A decibel is a way to measure how things change. It is a unit of measurement. Scientists use it to talk about power. They also use it to talk about sound.

One decibel is one tenth of a bel. A bel was named after Alexander Graham Bell. He was a famous pioneer in phones. Long ago, people used it to study telephone wires. They wanted to see how much power was lost in the cables.

Decibels work in a special way. They use a scale called a logarithm. This helps us compare two different values. For example, if power grows by ten times, the level goes up by 10 dB. If the power doubles, the level goes up by about 3 dB.

Some people measure power. Others measure root-power, which is like the strength of a signal. The scale stays the same for both. This makes the math easier for engineers. Today, many people use decibels in science. They use them to study electronics and sound. It is a very helpful tool for math.
