Neocolonialism is a way that strong nations control other lands. This often happens to countries that used to be colonies. These places are now officially independent and free. However, they still depend heavily on the former colonial powers. Instead of using soldiers, this control happens through indirect ways. It often involves money, trade, and culture. This creates a relationship where one country stays in charge.

This control works through many different systems. One way is through economic imperialism or global trade. Large international banks and groups can influence a country. They might give loans that come with strict rules. These rules are called loan conditionalities. They can change how a local government spends its money. Another way is through multinational corporations. These big companies might move into a developing nation. They often look for cheap labor and raw materials.

People began using this term after World War II. The French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre first used the word in 1956. Later, Kwame Nkrumah used it to talk about Africa. He was the president of Ghana from 1960 to 1966. He wrote a book called Neo-Colonialism, The Last Stage of Imperialism in 1965. He believed political freedom was not enough for a nation. A country must also have economic independence to be truly free.

Many specific examples show how this happens in the real world. In West Africa, fishing is a very important job. Starting in 1979, the European Union negotiated fishing contracts there. Foreign fleets began over-fishing the waters near Senegal and Mauritania. This led to many local people losing their jobs. In other places, like the former Belgian Congo, control was very strong. Some leaders in Africa even had close ties to France. This was called Françafrique and lasted for many years.

Understanding neocolonialism helps us see how the world is connected. It explains why some countries stay wealthy while others stay poor. This idea is linked to something called dependency theory. This theory says wealthy countries sit at the center of the world. Poor countries sit at the edge, or the periphery. The center takes resources like copper or coffee from the edge. This creates a cycle that is hard to break. It shows that true independence involves more than just voting.
