Globalism is a way to understand how our modern world connects. It is not just about things moving between countries. Instead, it is a way to study the patterns that link us all together. Some experts use the term to describe big ideas or ways of thinking. They call these ideas ideologies. This is different from globalization, which is the actual process of things connecting. One person, Manfred Steger, says there are different kinds of globalism. He mentions market globalism, justice globalism, and even jihad globalism.

To understand globalism, you have to look at how it works. It often involves networks that span many different continents. These networks can be about money, politics, or even culture. Some thinkers, like Joseph Nye and Robert Keohane, say globalism explains these wide connections. They use the word globalization to describe if these connections are growing or shrinking. It is like looking at the map of the world and seeing the invisible lines that tie us together.

The idea of globalism has a long history. Long ago, Adam Smith wrote about how goods could show how civilized a group was. In 1788, Christoph Martin Wieland wrote about cosmopolitanism. This was the idea of thinking beyond just one's own country. The modern version of globalism really started in the 1940s. It first became common in the United States. In 1943, a man named Ernst Jäckh used the word to describe the big goals of Adolf Hitler.

After World War II, the concept changed a lot. The United States became a very strong power during this time. In 1948, a planner named George F. Kennan noted that the U.S. held much of the world's wealth. Leaders wanted to create a new pattern of relationships between nations. They used something called economic integration. This means joining separate economies into larger groups. An economist named John S. de Beers used this term in 1941. By 1949, leaders like Paul G. Hoffman were talking about it often.

Today, people have many different views on globalism. Some see it as a way for countries to cooperate on hard jobs. For example, David G. Victor says countries might work together to fight climate change. However, other people use the word in a negative way. Some people in politics use it to argue against groups like the United Nations. They may worry that global rules could change traditional family life. Others use the term to talk about secret groups they do not trust. It remains a very big and complicated topic for the whole world.
