Internationalism is a way of thinking about how countries should act. It says that nations should work together through politics and trade.

People who believe this are called internationalists. They think that the ties between people are stronger than the borders that separate them. Instead of focusing only on their own country, they want to solve problems together. This can happen across different cultures, races, or classes. They believe that working together helps everyone reach common goals. It is the opposite of isolationism, which is when a country stays away from others.

This idea works by building links between different nations. One way to do this is through trade. If countries buy and sell things to each other, they become dependent on one another.

This connection can help prevent fights or wars. Another way is through international organizations. These groups allow many countries to talk and make decisions together. They can also share resources to solve big problems. Some people even dream of a world government to help keep the peace. This would mean sharing some power with a global group.

Many different people have shaped these ideas over time. In the 1800s, leaders like Richard Cobden and John Bright pushed for free trade. They believed that trade would make the world more peaceful.

However, other groups had different views on how to unite. In 1864, a group called the First International was formed in London. It included people like Karl Marx. They wanted workers from all countries to unite against unfair economic systems. They believed that your economic class was more important than your nationality. This showed that internationalism could be used for many different political goals.

History shows many important dates and groups for this movement. In 1889, Frédéric Passy and William Randal Cremer started the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Later, the League of Nations was created after World War I to help with security.

In the 1900s, thinkers like J.A. Hobson predicted that international courts would grow. Even famous scientists like Albert Einstein believed in a world government. He once called the focus on nationalism an "infantile sickness." These leaders and groups tried to create systems where countries could settle disputes through talk instead of fighting.

Today, internationalism is part of how many countries run their foreign policy. Middle powers, like Canada, often use "middle power diplomacy" to work with others.

Most people see internationalism as a way to respect different cultures. It encourages people to feel like citizens of the whole world. Many people also use charity to help those in other lands. It connects to what you know about the United Nations. It also connects to how different countries trade goods every day. It is a way to look at the world as one big community.
