Neoliberalism is a set of ideas about how money and power work.

It is a way of thinking about politics and the economy. Many people use this word to describe big changes in how societies are run. These changes focus on making markets the main way to organize life. Some people use the term to describe specific rules for trading. Others use it to talk about how much power a government should have. Because it means different things to different people, it can be a slippery concept.

These ideas work by moving power from governments to private businesses.

One way this happens is through privatization. This is when the government sells its services to private companies. Another way is through deregulation. This means removing rules that control how businesses act. Governments might also use austerity, which means spending less money on public things. They may also try to make labor markets more flexible. The goal is to let the private sector play a much larger role in society. This helps create more consumer choice and global trade.

This way of thinking has a long and complex history.

It began with European scholars during the 1930s. They wanted to find new ways to handle the economy after the Great Depression. In 1938, a meeting called the Colloque Walter Lippmann helped define these new ideas. At that time, scholars like Friedrich Hayek and Louis Rougier were involved. They talked about using competition to organize society. Later, in the 1950s and 1960s, many thinkers studied these economic theories. The term even appeared in an essay by Milton Friedman in 1951.

In the late 1900s, these ideas became very famous around the world.

In the 1970s and 1980s, leaders like Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan used them. Thatcher led the United Kingdom and Reagan led the United States. Another important time was in Chile under Augusto Pinochet. During his rule from 1973 to 1990, Chile saw big economic reforms. Many scholars began using the word "neoliberalism" to criticize those specific changes. By 1994, the term was being used in studies all over the globe. It became a very powerful way to describe how the world was changing.

Today, neoliberalism is linked to many things you might see in the news.

It is connected to how much the government spends on public works. It also relates to how countries trade with each other across borders. Some people see it as a way to make the world more connected. Others worry it makes life harder for some people. Even though it is a big topic, many people who follow these ideas do not call themselves neoliberals. It remains a central part of how we talk about the modern world.
