Neil Postman was a famous American writer and teacher. He spent much of his life in New York City. He was an expert on how media and technology change our culture.

Postman wrote 20 books and over 200 articles. He wanted people to think deeply about the tools they use. He was born in 1931 to a Jewish family. He studied at the State University of New York at Fredonia. Later, he earned two degrees from Columbia University. He lived in Flushing, Queens, for many years. He died from lung cancer in 2003 at age 72.

Postman spent his career teaching at many big universities. He taught at San Francisco State University starting in 1958. Then, he moved to New York University to teach. In 1971, he started a special program called media ecology. This study looks at how media affects our world. He even became a University Professor at NYU in 1993.

He also led the Department of Culture and Communication. Postman was a very busy thinker and leader. He shared his ideas in famous magazines like Time and The Atlantic Monthly.

He had many big ideas about how schools should work. In 1969, he wrote a book about teaching. He worked with a teacher named Alan Shapiro to try new ideas. They wanted schools to be places for real discovery.

They helped start a special program at New Rochelle High School. This program lasted for 15 years. Postman thought schools should be friendly communities for learning. He did not want schools to use too many tests or grades. He wanted students to learn how to be good citizens. He also wanted them to learn how to tell truth from lies.

Postman wrote about the dangers of too much technology. In his 1985 book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, he talked about television. He worried that TV turns serious news into simple entertainment. He felt this would stop people from having deep conversations.

He also wrote a book in 1992 called Technopoly. This book describes a society that lets technology rule everything. He said some people think technology is always better than human judgment. He did not hate all technology, though. He liked how the telephone and hygiene improved our lives. He just wanted us to stay in control.

His work helps us understand our modern world today. He was worried about personal computers in schools. He felt computers might stop students from learning together as a group.

He thought school should be a place for human connection. Postman's ideas remind us to use our own minds. We can enjoy new tools without letting them take over our lives. Even after he died, his articles were still shared by others. His life was a long journey of asking important questions. He taught us to look closely at the world around us.
