life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Nautiloids are a special group of sea animals called cephalopods. This group also includes modern animals like squid and octopus.

In the past, nautiloids were the main hunters in the ocean. They were very successful and lived in many different ways. Today, most of those ancient kinds are gone. Only two types still live: the Nautilus and the Allonautilus.

These living animals help us understand how their ancestors worked.

A nautiloid shell has many interesting parts that work together. The shell has one large room for the animal's body. The rest of the shell is split into smaller rooms called camerae. Thin, curved walls called septa separate these small rooms.

A fleshy tube called a siphuncle runs through all the chambers. This tube helps the animal control its buoyancy, which means staying at the right level in the water. It does this by using gas inside the shell. The animal also swims using jet propulsion. It pushes water out of a tube called a hyponome to move.

Scientists have studied nautiloids for a long time to learn their history. In 1888, a researcher named Bather created a common way to group them. He divided cephalopods into four main groups. These included the orthoceratoids, nautiloids, ammonoids, and coleoids.

Most nautiloids lived during the early Paleozoic era. They were very diverse during the Ordovician, Silurian, and Devonian periods. Over time, they began to decline as other relatives became more common.

The history of these animals is full of amazing numbers and places. The first nautiloids appeared in the late Cambrian period in China.

Some ancient species were truly huge. For example, the Endoceras could grow up to 6 meters long. Many fossils are found in special places like Morocco and Scandinavia. In these areas, so many shells gathered that they formed limestone beds.

These rocks tell us how many nautiloids once lived.

You can think of a nautiloid shell like a multi-room building. The siphuncle is like the plumbing that connects every room.

Just as a balloon stays afloat because of the air inside, the nautiloid uses gas to float. Their shells can be straight like a cone or curled like a snail. Some fossils even show beautiful patterns of color. This helps us see how these creatures lived in the deep, blue sea.
