Long ago, nautiloids were the main hunters in the sea. They had many different shell shapes. Some shells were straight like a cone. These are called orthocones.

Other shells curled into a coil. Many kinds of nautiloids died out. Today, only the Nautilus and Allonautilus still live.

A nautilus shell has many parts. It has a large room for the body. The rest of the shell has smaller rooms called camerae. Thin walls called septa divide these rooms. A fleshy tube called a siphuncle runs through the chambers. This tube helps the animal stay afloat. It does this by using gas inside the shell.

The animal moves using jet propulsion. It pushes water out of a tube called a hyponome. This lets the animal swim through the water. Modern nautiluses have up to 90 arms called tentacles. They use their beak-like jaws to eat small animals.
