Then, many new kinds of animals appeared in the sea. This happened over about 25 million years. Most major animal groups, called phyla, appeared during this time.

Some animals were very strange. One was called Opabinia. It had five eyes!

Scientists study fossils to learn about this time. Fossils are the remains of old living things in rocks. Most fossils are hard parts like shells. It is hard to find fossils of soft animals. But some special places, called lagerstätten, keep soft parts very well.

Scientists also find trace fossils. These are marks left behind by animals. They might be tracks or holes in the mud. These marks show how animals behaved long ago.

We do not know exactly why this happened. Some think the earth got much warmer. Others think the ocean changed in other ways. It is one of the biggest mysteries in science!
