In 1937, the Japanese army began moving through the country. They first fought a large battle in the city of Shanghai. After that, they marched toward Nanjing, which was the capital of China.

The Japanese military wanted to capture the city to end the war quickly. They believed taking the capital would make the Chinese government collapse. This period of history is remembered as one of the worst wartime atrocities ever recorded.

Violence began even before the army reached the city walls. As Japanese troops moved from Shanghai to Nanjing, they committed many crimes. They attacked small villages and harmed farmers along the way.

Soldiers used fire to destroy homes and buildings. They also used weapons like machine guns and bayonets against people. In some places, soldiers even held contests to see who could kill people with swords.

Many women and girls were also victims of terrible violence. Soldiers burned down about one third of the city using arson. This period of intense suffering continued through January and into March of 1938.

Historians have studied the number of people who died during this time.

The International Military Tribunal for the Far East estimated that more than 200,000 people were killed. Other scholars give different numbers based on their research. Some estimates say the death toll was between 100,000 and 200,000 people. Other studies suggest the number could be as high as 340,000 if the whole region is included. The number of women who were raped is also estimated to be between 4,000 and 80,000.

Some people worked very hard to protect innocent people during the chaos.

This zone was a safe place that saved at least 200,000 lives. After the war ended, some leaders like General Iwane Matsui were held responsible. He was found guilty of war crimes and was executed. This event remains a very important and difficult topic in history today.
