The Nanjing Massacre was a period of mass violence during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It took place in Nanjing, which was then the capital of the Republic of China. The event involved the mass killing and rape of Chinese civilians and prisoners of war. These actions were carried out by the Imperial Japanese Army. It is considered one of the most significant wartime atrocities in modern history.

The violence began as Japanese forces moved toward the city from Shanghai. After capturing Shanghai in November 1937, the Japanese military pushed into the Chinese interior. The Japanese Central China Area Army, led by General Iwane Matsui, reached the outskirts of Nanjing by early December. Japanese leaders believed capturing the capital would cause the Chinese government to collapse. This strategy was intended to secure a fast victory.

As the army advanced, they engaged in a systemic terror campaign. This campaign targeted the countryside between Shanghai and Nanjing. Japanese troops attacked villages and killed many inhabitants. They used arson to burn down homes and buildings. In some instances, soldiers used machine guns to execute large groups of villagers. They even held contests to see who could kill more people using swords.

The massacre in the city began on December 13, 1937. This followed several days of intense fighting and the retreat of the National Revolutionary Army. Once Japanese troops entered the city, they killed civilians including children, women, and the elderly. They also executed thousands of Chinese prisoners of war. This violated the established laws of war. Soldiers also committed widespread rape against women and girls of all ages.

To protect the population, an International Committee of Westerners established the Nanking Safety Zone. This zone was led by individuals such as John Rabe, a German citizen. The committee attempted to create a neutral area for refugees. This effort was largely successful and is credited with saving at least 200,000 lives. However, the zone faced challenges when Chinese soldiers remained in certain areas. This led to Japanese attacks on the refugee areas.

Historians use different methods to estimate the scale of the tragedy. The International Military Tribunal for the Far East estimated over 200,000 deaths. Newer estimates often place the death toll between 100,000 and 200,000. Some researchers suggest the number reaches 340,000 when including the entire Shanghai-Nanjing region. Estimates for the number of rapes range from 4,000 to over 80,000. These figures highlight the immense human loss during the six weeks of intense violence.

After the war, legal tribunals addressed the actions of the commanders. General Iwane Matsui was found guilty of war crimes and executed. Other leaders were not tried because they had died or committed ritual suicide. Prince Yasuhiko Asaka was granted immunity due to his status in the imperial family. Today, the massacre remains a sensitive and contentious topic in Sino-Japanese relations. Some groups continue to deny or minimize the historical facts of the event.
