During the early 20th century, the Empire of Japan expanded its power across Asia and the Pacific. This era included the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Pacific War. During these conflicts, the Japanese military committed many war crimes. War crimes are actions that break the established laws of war. These laws are meant to protect civilians and prisoners of war.

Many people call these events the "Asian Holocaust." The crimes involved massacres, torture, and starvation. They also included the use of forced labor.

These actions happened in many ways. The Imperial Japanese Army and Navy were responsible for much of the harm. Soldiers sometimes used chemical and biological attacks on civilians. This violated the Hague Conventions, which are international rules against using poison.

The military also used people for unethical human experimentation. Some women were taken to serve as "comfort women." This was a term used for sexual slavery. Many people were also forced to work in hard labor. These acts caused millions of deaths across many nations.

History shows that Japan's behavior changed over time. In the late 1800s, Japan followed other world powers by building an empire. During the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, Japan released thousands of Russian prisoners. They even paid the prisoners for their labor.

However, during the Shōwa era under Emperor Hirohito, the military became much more violent. The military leadership often knew about these crimes. They sometimes even justified the actions of their troops. This led to much greater suffering during the wars of the 1930s and 1940s.

After World War II ended, leaders held special trials to find justice. These were known as the Tokyo Trials. The trials divided people into different groups based on their crimes. "Class A" criminals were charged with crimes against peace. "Class B" criminals were found guilty of war crimes. "Class C" criminals were found guilty of crimes against humanity.

The Japanese government later accepted the results of these trials. They also accepted the terms of the Potsdam Declaration in 1945. This agreement called for the punishment of all war criminals.

Today, the history of these events is still a subject of debate. Many senior Japanese officials have issued apologies for the suffering caused. However, some people feel these apologies are not sincere enough.

Some Japanese history textbooks only give brief mentions of these crimes. Certain political leaders have even denied that some atrocities happened. This makes the topic very controversial in many parts of the world. People in Korea and China still remember these events clearly. Understanding this history helps us learn about international laws today.
