The Battle of Shanghai was a massive conflict in 1937. It took place between the Empire of Japan and the Republic of China. This fight happened during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Some historians believe it was the first battle of World War II. It was a huge event in a very big city. Shanghai was a major center for trade and business. It was the fifth largest city in the world at that time.

China lost many of its best trained soldiers during this time. Even though they lost, the Chinese resistance surprised the Japanese military. The Japanese thought they would win much faster than they actually did. This battle showed how modern fighting would look in large cities for many years.
