The Mukden incident was a very important event in history. It took place in a region called Manchuria in Northeast China. This area was a place where Japan and China had many disagreements. Japan wanted more control over the land and the railways there.

This event was actually a trick used by some Japanese military officers. They wanted to create a reason to start a war. This plan is often called a false flag event.

To make the plan work, officers had to act carefully. Two Japanese officers, Seishirō Itagaki and Kanji Ishiwara, came up with the idea. They wanted to make it look like Chinese forces attacked a railway. They chose a spot near Liutiao Lake for the plan.

This spot was not a bridge or a vital place. It was just a small section of flat land. They wanted the explosion to look real but not too big.

On the night of September 18, 1931, the plan began. A Japanese officer named Suemori Kawamoto used a small amount of dynamite. He set it off near the South Manchuria Railway tracks.

The blast was very weak and did little damage. Only a tiny section of the rail was affected. A train even passed over the tracks just minutes later. The Japanese military then blamed Chinese dissidents for the blast.

After the explosion, the Japanese military moved very quickly. On September 19, they attacked Chinese troops in the city of Mukden.

This attack led to a full invasion of Manchuria. Many Chinese soldiers tried to resist the invasion. However, the Japanese army was very organized and strong. Within five months, Japan had taken over most major cities. They then established a new state called Manchukuo.

Many things made it hard for China to defend the land. The Chinese government was busy with other big problems. They were also dealing with massive floods in the Yangtze River.
