This area is in Northeast China. Japanese officers wanted to take control of this land. They made a secret plan to start a fight.

On September 18, a Japanese officer named Suemori Kawamoto used dynamite. He set off a small blast near a railway line.

The blast was very weak. It did not even break the tracks. A train passed over the spot just minutes later.

Japanese leaders blamed Chinese people for the blast. They used this as a reason to invade.

Japanese troops attacked Chinese soldiers in the city of Mukden. They also took over many other large cities.

China was facing many hard problems at this time. This made it difficult to fight back. Within five months, Japan had taken over most of the land. They set up a new state called Manchukuo. Today, museums help people learn about this time in history.
