This period began when Portuguese explorers and merchants arrived in Japan. They traveled across long oceans to reach the Japanese islands. This contact brought many new ideas and tools to the country. It changed how people lived and how they fought wars. People from different worlds began to share their ways of life.

The Portuguese used huge ships called carracks for these long trips. These ships were very large and could carry a lot of cargo. Some were even twice or three times larger than common ships of that time. The Japanese called these vessels "black ships" because their hulls were painted black.

The traders acted as middlemen between China and Japan. They brought Chinese silk to Japan and took Japanese silver back to China. This helped move wealth between many different lands.

History shows that this trade began with the Portuguese in the mid-1500s.

In 1543, foreigners arrived on the island of Tanegashima. At first, the Japanese people were very wary of these new visitors. The two groups had very different customs and ways of writing. Later, the village of Nagasaki became a very important place for trade. In 1580, a local lord named Omura Sumitada leased the village to the Jesuits. This helped Nagasaki grow from a small fishing village into a busy city.

Japan was very rich in precious metals like silver and copper. Between 1615 and 1625, Japan produced about one third of the world's silver.

In return, Europeans brought items like clocks, glass, and wine to Japan. They also brought matchlock firearms and cannons. The Japanese also shared beautiful lacquerware, which is art with special coatings. Some of this art was so fine that it was sent to rich people in Europe.

A new group of leaders called the Tokugawa Shogunate rose to power. They became worried about the influence of Christianity from the Portuguese. To keep control, they issued the Sakoku policies to isolate the country. This meant Japan became more closed off from the outside world. Trade with Europeans was eventually limited to just the Dutch. They were only allowed to trade on a small artificial island called Dejima.
