It was called the Nanban trade. Portuguese explorers and merchants sailed to Japan. They brought many new things with them. They brought matchlock guns and cannons. They also brought new ways to build large ships. These ships were called carracks.

The Japanese called them "black ships" because of their dark hulls.

This trade changed how people lived. The Portuguese brought Christianity to Japan. In return, Japan sent goods back to Europe. Japan was very rich in silver and copper. At one point, Japan made one third of the world's silver!

They also sent beautiful lacquerware. This was art made with special coatings.

Over time, things began to change. The leaders in Japan, called the Tokugawa Shogunate, grew worried. They feared the influence of Christianity. They passed new laws to close Japan off. This made the country more isolated from the rest of the world.
