Namche Bazaar is a vital mountain town in northeastern Nepal. It is located in the Solukhumbu District within the Koshi Province. This town sits on the sides of a hill in the Khumbu area. It serves as the primary trading center for the Lanjey region. Many Sherpa people live here and work in the tourism industry. The town is a central hub for both locals and travelers.

The town functions as a gateway to the high Himalaya. Many trekkers visit Namche Bazaar for altitude acclimatization. This process helps the human body adjust to thinner mountain air. To support these visitors, the town offers many services. You can find various lodgings, stores, and internet cafés. There are even German bakeries and small cafes. Some visitors might even visit the Irish pub. It is said to be the highest and most remote Irish pub on Earth.

Trading is a major part of daily life in the town. A weekly market is held in the town center every Saturday morning. There is also a daily Tibet market available to shoppers. This market often features clothing and inexpensive consumer goods from China. Local food is also part of the experience. One popular local meal is yak steak. These markets connect the mountain region to wider trade networks.

Geography defines the location and surroundings of Namche Bazaar. The town is 137 km northeast of Kathmandu. It is also 366 km north of Biratnagar, the provincial capital. To the west lies the Kongde Ri peak. To the east stands the Thamserku peak. The town is 13 km north of the Tenzing–Hillary Airport in Lukla. Another site, Syangboche Airport, sits on a hill overlooking the town. This airport is at an altitude of 3,750 meters. It no longer carries passengers but receives occasional Russian cargo helicopters.

The population of the town is documented by official records. According to the 2001 census, 1,647 people lived in Namche Bazaar. These residents were organized into 397 individual households. The town is formally known as the Namche Village Development Committee. It is located within Ward number 5 of the Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality. These figures show a small but established community.

Modern infrastructure supports the residents and the growing tourism industry. The town receives electricity from the Thame-Namche hydropower plant. This plant has a capacity of 600 kW. It opened in October 1995 near the area of Thame.

This source of energy is essential for the town's many businesses. It helps power the restaurants, cafes, and lodges used by travelers.

The climate in Namche Bazaar is shaped by its high altitude. It is influenced by the summer monsoon season. The town experiences pleasant and wet summers. Conversely, the winters are characterized as being chilly and dry. Scientists use the Köppen climate classification to describe this weather. Depending on the specific method used, it is classified as either a subtropical highland climate or a humid continental climate. This weather pattern is a direct result of the town's location in the mountains.
