A musket is a long gun used a long time ago.

These guns were muzzle-loaded. This means you put the powder and bullet in the front end.

In the early 1500s, some muskets were very heavy. They were even heavier than the arquebus, which was another type of gun. These heavy muskets needed a forked stick to rest on. They were strong enough to break through metal armor.

Soldiers used paper cartridges to load their guns. A cartridge was a paper wrap with powder and a bullet inside.

To load, a soldier would tear the paper with his teeth. He poured the powder into the gun and then added the bullet. He used a long rod called a ramrod to push it all in.

Later, new tools helped keep the guns working. A tool called a worm helped clear debris from the barrel.
