A muzzleloader is a type of gun. You load it from the front end. This end is called the muzzle.

Loading a muzzleloader follows a set of steps. First, you add gunpowder. This is a powder that helps the gun fire. You can pour it in from a flask. You can also use a paper packet called a cartridge.

Next, you add a projectile. This is the object the gun shoots. It might be a round ball or a shaped bullet. You also use wadding. Wadding is made of felt, paper, or cloth. It helps hold the powder and the ball in place.

You use a long tool called a ramrod. The ramrod pushes everything down the barrel. To fire, you use a priming charge. This can be powder in a small pan or a percussion cap.

People still use these guns today. Some use them for sport or hunting. Others use them to study history. Some modern rifles even use smokeless powder to stay clean.
